A definition you can actually use
Strip away the marketing and an IDP is a product built for your own developers. Its users are the engineers inside your company, and its job is to hide the complexity of clouds, clusters, pipelines, and policy behind interfaces a developer can use on their own.
It is not a single tool you buy and switch on. It is the connective layer that sits across the tools you already run: your CI system, your scanners, your cloud accounts, your identity provider. The platform composes them into a coherent experience and applies a consistent set of defaults and guardrails across all of them. A developer asks for a new service or a deployment, and the platform takes care of the dozen steps that used to need a ticket, a meeting, or tribal knowledge.
The two ideas at the centre of every good IDP are self-service (the developer gets what they need without waiting on another team) and standardisation (everyone gets it the same, compliant way). Get those two right and the rest follows.
